Stacey Keay is a botanical artist and educator whose practice centres on plant pigment expressions. An art form rooted in the careful extraction, preparation and application of colour derived from plants, minerals and natural materials. Through this work, she explores how plants carry ecological, cultural, and historical knowledge and how pigment can act as a bridge between scientific observation and embodied experience.
She is the founding director of We Are Woven Studio, an educational space on the Gower Peninsula dedicated to creative learning, environmental awareness and community dialogue. The studio provides a setting for slow, attentive engagement with plant materials, where pigment-making becomes both a learning tool and a reflective practice.
Working with responsibly sourced petals, leaves, roots, minerals, and plant-based inks, Stacey’s plant pigment expressions are shaped by botanical principles of close observation, ethical collection and respect for plant life cycles. Colour is approached not as a fixed outcome, but as a living process influenced by seasonality, place, and ecological conditions. Subtle shifts in hue, texture, and tone are embraced as indicators of environmental relationship rather than controlled variables.
Her practice supports learning through sensory and material engagement, encouraging participants to slow down, observe closely and develop a deeper awareness of plants as active agents within cultural and ecological systems. Within a national botanical garden context, this work offers an accessible yet heartfelt way to connect audiences with plant science, sustainability and the living histories embedded in botanical materials.
