I am a self-taught ceramicist based in Mumbles, Wales, where I teach hand-building techniques from my small studio. My creative foundation lies in textile design, having studied at Bath College of Art (now Bath Spa University), and this sensibility continues to inform my ceramic practice. Surface, pattern, and narrative remain central to the way I approach clay.
I do not consider myself a traditional potter. Rather than focusing on thrown forms, I construct hand-built pieces that act as surfaces for drawing and mark-making. The clay becomes a canvas. Through sgraffito, inlay (Mishima), and oxides, I create layered surfaces that hold patterns and shapes inspired by nature, the textures of landscape, and stories gathered through journeys. Line is particularly important to me: I draw into leather-hard clay, inlay colour, and then scratch back through the surface to reveal contrast and depth, allowing the imagery to emerge through subtraction as much as addition.
I work primarily with white earthenware clay, chosen both for its economical firing temperature and for its pale, receptive surface, which allows greyscale designs and subtle tonal shifts to be clearly articulated. The inlay process enables ideas to be embedded within the clay body itself, transforming three-dimensional forms into narrative vessels.
My practice moves fluidly between sculptural and functional forms. Whether an object is held in the hand or encountered as a standalone piece, each work invites a closer look at its surface — a space where drawing, texture, and story converge.
